Elementary school children who spend time playing cell phones and computer "games", high school children who have been harassed by a large percentage of the internet and at the same time a failure of parents to control their children for safe Internet use , emerge as evidence of ITE research on 13,000 students, with the background of their online habits, how their psychology is affected by social networks and online gaming.

The survey was conducted under the approval of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs in November-December 2019 on a sample of 13,000 pupils aged 10-18 in approximately 500 schools in the Attica, Thessaloniki, Evros, Ioannina, Heraklion and Dodecanese prefectures. 10 children in elementary school and 4 in 10 children in high school do not discuss with their parents the issues of safe internet use, while a large proportion of parents continue to set no limits either on the time children spend online or on internet. content that they are allowed to access.

As it turns out from the responses of the children, many parents do not even know what their child is doing online, while 30% of primary school children and 60% of high school children will hesitate or tell their parents if something happens to him and upset him during an online game, mainly because they think his parents are not engaged, either because he is afraid of being banned from playing, or because he thinks parents do not know how to help him.
As George Kormas, Head of the Hellenic Safe Internet Center Help Line, told RES-EA: “Research shows for the first time in our country that 10% of primary school children go to play games and 21% of teenagers. This shows that children do not have the control they should. In addition, 60% of children access social media from primary school, and about 94% of our teens are in social media. I would like to give particular value to the role of parents, which unfortunately weakens year after year. We see that 40% of parents have never spoken to their children about safe internet and reaches 60% of Gymnasium children. So we see that the role of parenting has to be greatly enhanced, as we realize that children surf alone in an adult-made space. "

One of the topics the research focused on was the degree to which children are influenced by what they see on social networks. As two out of ten children aged 13-18 are concerned about the number of "Likes" they will receive on content uploaded to a social network, 19% have deleted a photo that did not receive a satisfactory Like number and 28 % uses systematic filters on the photos they share.

59% of primary school children and 94% of high school / high school children have a social network profile while YouTube is universal (95.5% in elementary school - 97% in high school / high school). ). Of the primary school children who are engaged in social media despite being not allowed at their age, about one in three do not have a private profile, meaning their photos can be viewed by those using social media.
There is also evidence that research shows that 12% of Primary and 24% of older children accept requests from strangers, while one in ten Primary and approximately one in three High School / High School students state that they have meet someone she met online.

Equally worrying is the dimension of online harassment received by 18% of primary school children and 33% of high school / high school children, with 3% of primary school children and 5% of older children According to the results of the survey, it has been intimidating that very personal photos will be made public on the internet, while 13% of high school / high school children say that they have shared very personal photos.

In terms of online games, according to the survey, 67% of primary school children and 61% of high school / high school children are involved, while about one in three primary school children and one in two high school / high school children play with people. who does not know in real life and even talks to them (29% of primary school children, 52% of high school / high school children).

In regards to Online Gaming, about one in ten children of all levels is addicted and says they enjoy more when playing than spending time with their friends, while 11% of elementary and 21% of high school children / High school is late to sleep in the evening due to its occupation with online games.

42% of primary school children and 31% of older children do not know how to protect their devices from viruses or malware. 48% of children aged 10-12 years and 32% of older children are unaware of the tools they can use in the event that something or someone disturbs them online.
